WatchWatch
Darkness changed to light and despair to hope. Cold to warm and silence to song.

Why
do ambitious restaurants spare no expense when it comes to meat, vegetables, fruits, spices and spirits. Present beautiful food on fine china and crystal glasses for wine. Then go ahead and serve you coffee tasting of medicine, made with third rate beans in not very clean coffeemakers?

Sometimes loosing
is not a bad thing. Life may become simpler. Time may become more abundant. Pressure to perform may subside. Money may last longer. Why then compete at all? The other day, listening to a podcast, Colin Harmon, twice Barista Champion of Ireland and World Barista Cup finalist described to James Hoffman how making the worst products better is a better and easier way to raise the quality of your...

Actions speak with a louder voice than words
Churches need to write that in flaming twelve foot letters on the walls opposite the pulpit, so that preachers never forget this simple lesson. Bishops and other administrators need to have this lesson tattoo’d on their foreheads. Politicians need to be reminded of this on an hourly basis. Preferably by somebody that suffers the consequences of their (in)action.

I remember
a lovely cup of coffee from when I was 5 years old. my grandmothers mulled wine. my grandfathers barbecued chickens. my other grandfathers cherry cake. the wild peaches and last strawberries of the season, along with the heavy sweet Pinot Gris I chased them down with. my first glass of Palestinian coffee I drank. the Mangoes and Avocados my grandfather grew. the taste of the very first...

Questions for Christians
as asked by an unnamed teenaged atheist. Religious diversity 1. Why are you a Christian and not a Hindu/Muslim/etc.? There are thousands of different religions and gods out there to choose from. Do you believe the way you do because of your parents / upbringing? - Upbringing, culture to begin with. Then religious experience, faith and commitment to Jesus, whom I believe to be the son of...

Cat
The fat cat on the mat may seem to dream of nice mice that suffice for him, or cream; but he free, maybe, walks in thought unbowed, proud, where loud roared and fought his kin, lean and slim, or deep in den in the East feasted on beasts and tender men. The giant lion with iron claw in paw, and huge ruthless tooth in gory jaw; the pard dark-starred, fleet upon feet, that oft soft from aloft leaps...

How is it
that ageing friends supply you with a mirror? Just by looking at some of my classmates from elementary school, I realize how old I’ve become.

Your bank doesn't give a damn
for you and neither does your politician. Trust them to make a bad situation worse by throwing you just enough slack to entangle you more securely in their web. When the dust settles, the bankers can be found sipping aged Rum in the Islands and the politicians enjoying fat pensions in the bosom of a greatful nation.

The times
have finally caught up with me. Thought I’d outrun them. Let’s see how long it takes me to get up and carve out a life, this time around.

Shut up!
he screamed out of the open window at the top of his lungs. At three in the morning. Couldn’t sleep. The birds didn’t take notice and didn’t shut up. Their song can reach quite a crescendo during short and light summernights.

Have you eaten?
she asked as I sat down and was gone before I could answer. Returned with a pot full of meat soup with beans and vegetables. Inspite of the 30°C in the shade, this was to be expected, at 4 in the afternoon. After a generous helping, she returned with a ladle full of goodness, topping up my plate. All this inspite the fact that I had indeed eaten a hot meal at 2. Have you eaten? No is not an...

He lifted the mosquito net
and lay down on the bed beside me. Didn’t say a word. I didn’t mind his silence. I told him all that came to my mind, all the nice things I could think of. He never said anything. I don’t remember him leaving the bed, must have fallen asleep. Even at the age of three I realized he couldn’t understand me. Grandfather and I didn’t speak the same language until I was...
